Plastic surgery in France
Plastic surgery is an ancient medical specialty and even the ancient Egyptians and Romans performed cosmetic operations. In France, plastic surgery became an independent branch of medicine only after the Second World War.
Since 1981 plastic and reconstructive surgery were given by the Medical Degrees Council the status of independent disciplines. The average age of the French Plastic Surgeons Society members is 44 years.
Plastic surgery can be used to repair:
- abnormalities caused by birth defects, such as a cleft lip and palate, webbed fingers and birthmarks
- areas damaged by the removal of cancerous tissue, such as from the face or breast
- extensive burns or other serious injuries, such as those sustained during motor vehicle accidents
Plastic surgery can also help a person recover their self-esteem and confidence following surgery for an abnormality that has existed from birth (congenital abnormality), an injury or illness.
Cosmetic plastic surgery
Cosmetic plastic surgery includes surgical and non surgical procedures that reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve appearance and self-esteem. Healthy individuals with a positive outlook and realistic expectations are appropriate candidates for cosmetic procedures. Plastic surgery is a personal choice and should be done for yourself, not to fulfill someone else’s desires or to try to fit an ideal image.
