According to the last will of Baron Adolphe de Rothschild , who died Feb. 7, 1900 , his wife Baroness Julie Caroline began to build a facility specializing in ophthalmology, for the ” needy ” like Ophthalmic Hospital that he had already established in Geneva.
The facility opened on May 1 , 1905, brought the property in full swing : 80,510 consultations in the first year and 105,051 the second testament to the immediate success of this exceptional hospital that offers free consultations, care and medicines.
The crib allowing mothers to stay close to their sick children to the evening consultations available to workers who can’t leave their workplace during the day , everything is meant for combining medical excellence with a genuine social commitment.
The Fondation Ophtalmologique Adolphe de Rothschild remains a reference in diseases of the eye for more than a century.Expert teams support all specialties of ophthalmology from screening to surgery more complex cases: cataract , refractive surgery, glaucoma, corneal disease or conjunctival , retinal diseases , diseases of eyelids, lacrimal system and orbit, neuro-ophthalmology, strabismus, pediatric ophthalmology at birth, inflammation and eye infections. The Department of Neurology is a general neurology service that supports all the pathologies of the central and peripheral nervous system. The service carries 3,500 hospitalizations per year (2500 day hospital , 1000 classic hospitalization).
The Department of Neurosurgery is composed of adult service, a pediatric ward and a center for the treatment of pain in surgical orientation. More than 1,800 patients are cared for annually by our 10 neurosurgeons.
